The new year is a wonderful time to look ahead and plan out your year and set some beautiful intentions for how you want to feel, what you want to create, achieve, cultivate, see and do.
In the first Ritual Series post of 2019, I wanted to talk all about setting some intentional goals for the year. Maybe you’ve thought of a few ‘resolutions’, but have you really unpacked why these matter to you and exactly how you plan on seeing them to fruition?
If you did The Year End Ritual that I posted recently, you will have already reflected on the year that was and shown yourself gratitude for everything that happened. If you haven’t done this, I suggest taking some time to sit down and reflect on last year before you get started on creating your new goals. When you take the time to actually list all the things that happened, the relationships you made, opportunities you created and things you achieved, it helps to realise that so much can happen in a year.
Let’s set some intentional goals!
First off, I want to encourage you to reflect on how you want to feel this year. So many ‘resolutions’ tend to be very externally focussed things like ‘lose weight’ and ‘make more money’. I believe that goals that represent how you want to feel are much more likely to be achieved. So, how do you want to feel this year? Happy, fulfilled, creative, loved, adventurous? Write down a few feeling words that resonate with you now.
I love setting a word, or words, as a theme for the energy I want to bring to my year. For me, 2019 is a year of EXPANSION. This word just came to me and I didn’t question it (you have to listen to your intuition with this!) and since I chose it, it has shown up multiple times in my oracle and tarot card readings in the past two days. What word comes to your mind immediately? I asked the members of my private Facebook group, Sensuality & Soulful Self-Love, what their theme for 2019 is and here are a few they shared with me:
POWER, LOVE, SHINE, COMMIT, ALIGN, EMBRACE, CONNECTION, CREATE & AUTHENTICITY.
All such powerful words, right?
Choose the word that comes to mind first, that encompasses how you want to feel this year. I like to keep this word somewhere I’ll see it regularly. Mine is in the centre of my vision board (The Vision Board Ritual is coming soon!) but you might like to save it as your phone background, write it on a post it note on your mirror or maybe put it in a frame in your house. Whatever way works best for you, be sure to have this word where you can be reminded of it daily.
Choose your goals
Now we get on to creating some goals! I’m sure you’ve all heard of SMART goals before – make them Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound. Remember to come from a place of self-love, and never self-hate. Revisit your word of the year and how you want to feel. Does your goal align with this energy?
You can set as many goals as you like, but I encourage you not to get overzealous so as not to become overwhelmed.
Remember that you don’t have to set ALL your goals for the whole year now and you certainly don’t have to wait until the start of a new year to set goals. Consider starting a regular monthly goal setting and reflection ritual (check out my Full Moon Ritual and New Moon Ritual for more about this).
Unpack your goals
When you have chosen some goals, take some time to journal about why these goals are important by answering the following questions:
- Why is this important to me?
- How will I feel when I achieve this?
- What might stop me from achieving this?
- How can I combat these hurdles?
- What steps must I take to achieve this?
- What will I do to celebrate achieving this goal?
Keep yourself accountable
Now that you have all your goals ready to go, be sure to schedule in the steps you need to take to achieve them. Maybe this looks like joining a class, setting aside regular time to practice a skill, sending some emails to key people, doing some research. Whatever steps you determined where the most important in the previous point, now map out when you’re going to do each of these.
At the start of each year I love doing my Tarot for the Year. It’s become my New Years ritual and it’s such a lovely way to get an overview of what’s to come. I do this by choosing my favourite tarot or oracle card deck (I always use The Wild Unknown Tarot for spread) and laying them out in a set spread.
Choose your favourite deck, cleanse it (more about working with decks here), set your intention to receive guidance for the year ahead, shuffle and then intuitively choose which cards to lay out in the spread (as seen below).
Take some time to yourself to read about each card’s meaning and journal on how they make you feel. If you get some less favourable cards, know that you have free will and you can choose to shift the energy of each month with your actions and intentions.
I like to take a photo of the spread to save to my favourites, as well as writing down a brief overview of each card and its corresponding energy in my journal to refer back to. To ensure I don’t forget about it throughout the year, I also set reminders in my phone for the first day of each month with the name of the card pulled (for example, January – Two of Cups). This way I can be reminded each month and go back to read more about the card again.
